Traveling the world doesn’t have to break the bank—in fact, with a little planning and some smart strategies, you can explore new places while keeping your budget intact. Whether you’re planning a quick weekend getaway or a long-term adventure abroad, knowing how to stretch your dollars can make all the difference. In this post, we’ll dive into my practical, tried-and-true tips to help you save money on everything from flights and accommodations to food and activities. 

Let’s Talk About Flights

I have a confession…I am a Delta snob.

While some may get turned off by their price tag, there are many cost effective ways to fly with them. My all time favorite Delta hack is the difference in fare reimbursement. If you purchase a ticket (Main Cabin or Above) and the fare drops, Delta will reimburse you with either money back to your card or an “e-credit” to be used at a later date. You can call or use the Delta App to take advantage of that offer. It does require you to consistently check your flight. In addition, Delta will not notify you that your airfare has changed.

It’s easy to tell which tickets you may see a drop in fare based on the codes used when booking:

• Full Main Cabin Fare (plane is at max capacity, so the most $$$): Y,B,M,W, S
• Main Cabin (normal airfare): H, Q, K, L
• Discounted Main Cabin (probably won’t drop much): U,T
• Deeply Discounted Main Cabin: (lowest price): X, V

What If You Don’t Fly Delta?

We can address that at another time (haha). There are many ways to save money on flights regardless of your airline allegiance.

1. Search and book flights on Tuesdays. Be sure to erase your browser history and cookies when continuously searching for the same flight. You will inadvertently cause prices to increase because the system will think that more people are looking for that same flight.
2. Don’t travel to the popular place during the popular time. If you HAVE to see the Japanese cherry blossoms in spring or you MUST experience Positano in the summer, understand that the pricing will increase because it is peak season and you’ll need to save accordingly. Personally–I swear off Europe during the summer time. Everything is really crowded and the prices are double or triple what you would spend any other time of year.  As an example, most flights from Atlanta to the continent of Europe during the summer of 2025  are around $2200–that is 50% more than the shoulder and off-seasons. 
3. Be flexible. Travel or fly during the week instead of on weekends. If you can take days off at any time during the year, choose the time when your location is off season.

Strict with time? If you can only travel during one particular time of year, choose a location that is not as popular. Just because everyone goes there, doesn’t mean it’s an amazing place. It just means that it’s crowded…seriously…ask me my thoughts on Paris. 

If none of those options apply, be flexible on how you get to your location. If you really need to have an Italian summer, consider flying into another country like Germany, and then training to your first destination. Use websites like point.me or https://seats.aero to help you book the most cost effective flight based on starting and ending location.

Travel Credit Cards

I’ve found that the biggest misconception about travel rewards is that people think they need to spend a lot of money on travel in order to make the card work for them. That couldn’t be further from the truth! 

Look at what you spend most of your money on, and then find a card that gives you the best rewards based on what you spend. If you don’t spend a lot of money on flights, particularly flights from Delta, then that Delta Amex Card isn’t for you…and that’s ok. Choose a credit card that allows you to earn rewards points towards any airline or hotel. 

My two cards that I swear by are the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Delta Amex Platinum card. I think Chase actually provides the best bang for your buck, and here’s why:

• You gain rewards points through popular spending habits like food, gas, and streaming services.
• Your rewards points can be used towards any major airline or hotel.
• Your points actually go farther because you can transfer your points to an airline or hotel of choice allowing you to get more than just the 1 point to 1 dollar ratio.
• You have no foreign transactions fees.

The Delta cards are great if you are traveling continuously with Delta because you will eventually get status. With status comes all the upgrades. However if you are just starting out, I recommend Chase Sapphire over Delta Amex.

Be sure to look at the annual fee.

Do the perks associated with the card balance the annual fee? For example, the Delta lounge costs about $50 per person per entrance. Once inside, you are privy to unlimited food, drinks, showers, working spaces, etc. I know that I am at the airport at least 2 times a month. Therefore the Amex card that waives the lounge fee (because it is included in the annual fee) makes sense to me. 

Shop Around For Hotels

Stop renting Airbnbs. Airbnbs have become more expensive than many hotels, and they have far less amenities. In addition, many cities are beginning to pas s legislation that prohibits people from listing their property as an Airbnb site.

How can you find the best hotel rate?

The same rules apply from flights to hotels. If you want the best possible rate, travel during the week and/or during an off season. While that can be unrealistic, here are some other ways to help you save money:

1. Look on the hotel website for the best available rate. Do not use budget websites like hotels.com or kayak.com. While they may be discounted, their terms and conditions are much more strict and will actually cause a lot of problems if you need to switch or cancel your trip.
2. Call the hotel and ask for their best available rate. Sometimes you can actually get a better rate over the phone.
3. Try new hotels–usually they offer a discount if you stay and leave a review.
4. Stay a little outside of the location that you are traveling to. Being in the middle of Manhattan, Rome, or Sydney may be AMAZING, but the reality is that you are not going to be in the hotel often. Save some money by booking further out.

Find the Discounted/Free Activities

Did you know most major cities in the world have free walking tours? 

When you’re on vacation, visiting free tourist attractions is an easy way to save money. Instead of spending a lot of money on pricey tickets and admission fees, you can participate in a variety of free activities. Visiting free museums is a popular option that can offer educational and cultural experiences without costing you anything. You can also use your student ID to get a discount. Another way to discover free activities when traveling is to research online or ask locals for recommendations. Many cities offer free events and festivals that provide entertainment and a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture. 

Shop At Local Grocery Stores

Grocery shopping can be a great way to save money, especially for lunch! When shopping at local grocery stores while traveling, it is important to consider the types of food to buy and avoid. Opting for local produce and ingredients can support the local economy and provide a more authentic culinary experience. Also, stocking up on non-perishable items such as snacks, canned goods, and beverages can be convenient for quick meals or late-night cravings. 

Bring A Reusable Water Bottle (If You Can Drink The Tap Water)

Instead of constantly buying disposable water bottles or drinks, you can simply refill your reusable bottle whenever you need to hydrate. This eliminates spending money on expensive beverages whenever you feel thirsty. Just be sure to check whether or not you can drink the tap water.

At the end of the day, traveling on a budget doesn’t mean sacrificing meaningful experiences—it just means being smart, flexible, and intentional. By planning ahead, staying open to local options, and finding little ways to cut costs along the way, you can stretch your travel dollars further and focus on what really matters: the memories you’re making.

Lake Lanier. The infamous man made, busy Georgia lake. While most people are familiar with its water park and boat rentals, what you may not know is that there is a teacher owned outfitter that is fully supported by Forsyth County Parks and Rec. Burton Outdoor Adventures (BOA) is an e-Foil (motorized board), kayak and paddle board rental and instruction facility. They currently have 5 locations on Lake Lanier, and they are continuing to expand.

6. Historic Banning Mills, Whitesburg

Our final Georgia Summer Adventure has a little bit of everything. Welcome to Historic Banning Mill, an adventure resort in Whitesburg, Georgia. This resort currently holds TWO Guinness World Records: the world record for the longest zip line canopy tour and tallest free-standing rock wall. While most people come for the zip lining, you can complete aerial courses, tour on ATVs, hike, traverse suspension bridges, horesback ride, etc. There is so much to do!

Located about 45 minutes South of Atlanta, you can choose to stay on site or to drive to the Beltline for some post adrenaline dinner and drinks!

Hiking in the spring often gets a bad rap. Cold, rainy weather mixed with muddy trails tend to keep most hikers indoors…and I haven’t even mentioned the Georgia Pollen. That being said, spring is one of the best seasons to embrace cooler weather, to fight fatigue, and to enjoy your surroundings without too many people around. It’s important to dress appropriately and to pack a few essentials in order to combat unpredictable weather and trail conditions.

Top 3 Tips When Hiking in the Spring:

1. Layer Up: spring weather can be unpredictable, so layering is important! Each clothing layer has a unique function, and you can always add/remove layers depending on weather.
2. Prepare For The Weather: there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear. Forecasts can change almost instantly, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Be ready to adapt if forecasts are wetter, colder, etc.
3. It’s All About The Shoes: this most important decision you will make in regards to your hike. It is important to find the right shoes that best suit your feet and terrain; otherwise you will have a miserable experience!

Cotton clothing is especially problematic during the rest phases of hiking trips in cold conditions (or when you reach a windy peak) as it is often soaked with sweat and therefore it leads to rapid body heat loss. This can in severe cases lead to hypothermia.

Ventre’s Adventures is a travel company that specializes in study abroad programs for middle school and high school students.  We build transformative learning experiences and college readiness programs that challenge students’ cultural and personal comfort zones. Each program is carefully designed to target specific learning goals enhancing the student’s ability to prepare for higher education.

We pride ourselves on developing the most cost-effective education programs that allow students to learn from some of the best professionals in the field.

But—we get it.

Traveling can still be expensive. In order to try and serve as many students as possible, Ventre’s Adventures is launching a scholarship fund to provide students with the financial possibility to participate in a program. Each student from an enrolled tour will have the option to apply for a scholarship to use towards the cost of his or her program.

Basic Scholarship  Details

In order to apply, the participants must submit two essays, each 500-700 words in length. The first essay is the statement of purpose and the second essay is community impact essay. Participants must also submit two letters of recommendation. The recipient of each scholarship will be chosen by a selection committee, which will be separate from all Ventre’s Adventures personnel.

• Q. Who is eligible?

A. Any full-time student accepted into a Ventre’s Adventures student travel program who has signed, or parents have signed, the Terms and Conditions and Waiver of Release. Full-time is defined as a full schedule for both middle school students and high school students. For high school students, most of the curriculum should be completed on campus.

• Q. Are previous recipients of the Ventre’s Adventures Scholarship Fund Eligible to Re-Apply?

A. A Ventre’s Adventures Scholarship recipient can only receive the scholarship once. If you previously declined the scholarship or if were not awarded the scholarship, you are welcome to re-apply.

• Q. Does the selection committee know the names and socioeconomic status of each applicant?

A. No. The scholarship is need blind, and the committee will not know the names of the applicants.

• Q. What Is The Financial Value Of A Ventre’s Adventures Scholarship?

A. We are hoping to award one, $500-$750 (more in the future!) scholarship to each student travel program. As we continue to grow, so will our scholarships!

• Q. Who Funds The Ventre’s Adventures Scholarship?

A. Ventre’s Adventures hosts two events a year, as well as accepts donations year-round.

• Q. Is There A Health Insurance Requirement If I Receive A Ventre’s Adventures Scholarship?

A. Yes. If you are selected as a scholarship recipient, you must furnish evidence of international insurance coverage to include health, accident, emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains insurance.

How To Apply For The Scholarship

Step 1: Write The Scholarship Essays

There are two essays required as a part of the Ventre’s Adventures Scholarship. You should carefully review your essay, and proofread for spelling, grammar, and content prior to submission.

Essay 1: Statement of Purpose

In this essay, be specific in your individual reasons for choosing this program. It would be beneficial to research about the host country ahead of time. Discuss these topics:

• How will this program help you achieve your future academic and/or professional goals?
• Why did you select this particular program?
• What aspects abroad do you expect to be the most challenging?
• What knowledge, skills, and experiences will you draw on to meet these challenges?

Essay 2:  Community Impact Essay

In this essay, you will discuss global citizenship, and how you will contribute to building a mutual understanding between your home country and your destination country.

You will create a proposal that addresses the following topics as specifically as possible:

• In what way can you create an understanding between where you live and where you traveled? Design a specific project.
• What are the goals of your design? Who is the intended audience?
• How will you showcase the impact of your experience abroad into your design?
• How can you bring awareness to Ventre’s Adventures and the Ventre’s Adventures Scholarship?

Step 2: Request Other Documents

Each application also requires two letters of recommendation. Both letters of recommendation should be signed and saved as a PDF.  The letter of recommendation can be from a teacher, coach, boss, etc. The letter of recommendation cannot be completed by family members and/or guardians.

Step 3: Submit Your Scholarship Application

Once you have all of your documents, you will email them to scholarships@ventresadventures.com.

In your email, state your name, grade, and the program you are traveling on. All documents should be attached to the email, and saved in the following format:

I could not wait to board my flight back to Bali.  I was stressed, tired, and completely overwhelmed with life. I sat down for a full 24 hours of travel knowing that when I landed in Denpasar, everything would immediately be better. Except—it wasn’t. Not immediately anyways.

Bali never fails in teaching me valuable lessons. Last year’s lesson helped me come to terms with beginning a new life, while this year’s lesson brought about a hard dose of reality—and tears because my throat was literally on fire. So here we go:

Let Go, Love Bali

I have tonsillitis. Actually, let’s rephrase that. I have tonsillitis…. in Bali…. And if we are being honest, it’s pretty much my fault. I understand that’s a bold statement, as nobody ever chooses to get sick on purpose—but as I laid awake patiently waiting for a café to open, I realized I shouldn’t have let it get this far.

Several years ago, I picked up a Giving Key. For those who are unfamiliar, Giving Keys are necklaces. The beauty behind the necklaces is that the keys represent people, flawed, yet one-of-a-kind, and are stamped with daily inspiration to carry us through seasons of life. Once worn for a period of time, you pay it forward by giving the key away to someone who needs it more.

My phrase was “Let Go.”

Why?

Because I can’t. I overanalyze. I overthink. I overwork.

I will be the first one to tell you that I am an ambitious workaholic who will run herself into the ground making sure that everyone else is ok. All the while, I still consider myself to be incredibly blessed. I am doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing (or so I thought), and I worked very hard to get to where I am today. Most people don’t necessarily have the opportunity to do life over, and at the age of 27 I restarted, everything.

Even though I restarted, I still held on to a few things that haven’t necessarily allowed me to be at peace moving forward. I never “let go.” For example, I didn’t allow myself the opportunity to think about what I actually wanted in my new stage of life. I was still going through the motions and doing what I thought I should be doing based on society’s standards.

The school year restarted, and I was teaching three subjects. If you are not familiar with the education system, three or more subjects is absurd. You can’t possibly excel because there is not enough time in the day. I left defeated daily because I thought I was doing a disservice to my students—always.

In addition, I was approached to coach lacrosse—in a way that was like if you don’t coach, you aren’t doing enough for the school. I loved teaching, and I loved my students more than anything. I couldn’t fathom the idea of letting the school down, so I said yes to coaching.

What. A. Disaster.

Not because of the girls. My lacrosse players were some of the best parts of my day. I simply could not breathe. I was up at 6 in the morning teaching until 4 in the afternoon, coaching until 7 in the evening (later if there was a game), and then I came home to run a business. Most nights I was up past midnight.

Ventre’s Adventures morphed into something much bigger than a passion project. This, again, was my doing because I am an overachiever. The request for trips increased and the pressure to stay “relevant” on social media amplified. I still am completely taken aback by the amount of support my company received, and I am so excited about the direction that it’s going in. However my excitement increased my workload. Most people think that traveling is easy. Y’all—leading trips is not a vacation. In fact, I work during my vacation days. That’s typically when Ventre’s Adventures departs.

As I left for Bali, things began to crack. My eighth year of teaching took a massive toll. By February, I knew that I needed a career shift, but I worried about abandoning my students. Seriously, I never allowed myself to catch a break.

Personally my life was messy too. I was lonely. I lost many friends. Partly because I worked so much, and partly because I couldn’t relate to people anymore. I’m not married. I am chasing two careers at once, and I find solace on an airplane. Dating—nonexistent. I have been on some disaster dates all ending with the synopsis of me as overly ambitious woman with a big personality that travels more than necessary. Thank you, next.

I’m not complaining. That’s not what this post is about. I chose this. All of this. I wanted to accomplish so many goals and to adventure to far off places. I just stopped being proud of myself in the process. I was overthinking and overanalyzing everything. I became too intimidated to tell my parents that I wanted to change careers, too scared to tell friends that I needed help, and too worried about letting people down.

Fast forward to me dying at my Airbnb in Canggu, and we are officially all caught up. It was 4:12 am. The earliest café opened at 6:00 am, which meant that I had 2 hours to entertain myself before I could eat and take the antibiotics.

It was in that moment of solitude that I realized my life needed to change, again. I didn’t want to be intimidated, to overthink or to overanalyze. I began to tell people how I felt, immediately. From a poke bowl lunch, to tearful phone calls to friends, to a stressful conversation about a career change, I put myself out there. I let go.

Were the conversations hard? Absolutely. Did some of the conversations crash and burn. Yes—but each time I began to feel a sense of relief, a sense of happiness.

Before returning to Atlanta, I watched the most beautiful sunset with that rare kind of company who appreciated everything about me, flaws and all. As the sun was fading, I remember hearing, “Bali must love you because she is giving you a stunning goodbye.” Smiling, I couldn’t help but think I actually love myself too.

So that’s the lesson.

Let Go.

Have faith in whatever will be will be, but fight like hell for what you want. Be proud of who you are, and not ashamed of how someone else sees you. The people who are meant to stick around will. The people who don’t are doing you a favor.

Be fearlessly authentic. Allow yourself to chase your dreams and choose your happiness. Have those tough conversations. Lay it all out there because life is too crazy and too short for you to miss out on something amazing.

To whom?

Well let’s just say it’s the rare kind of company I hope to reunite with again soon. Until then, I’m doing my very best to let go.

A Foodie’s Guide to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is so much more than its beautiful canals and biked covered streets that spill out of its shadows. Amsterdam is a city of diverse denizens and historic neighborhoods with all encompassing things to do. When visiting, you (or rather your tastebuds), will be completely awestruck by hole-in-the eateries, bistros, and cafes creating fusion fare and farm to table Dutch dishes. It’s inside Amsterdam’s kitchens that you’ll start to feel the city’s character.

So get ready to truly get to know the canal city by diving into some of its amazing food and eateries. Here is a foodie’s guide to Amsterdam!

A Foodie’s Guide of WHAT to Eat:

StroopWafel

Probably one of the most Instagrammed dish from the Netherlands, the Stroopwafel is basically heaven on earth. A stroopwafel is a waffle made from two thin layers of baked dough with a caramel filling in the middle. It is then dipped in chocolate and covered in your favorite toppings. Drooling yet?

Bitterballen

This is one of Holland’s favorite snacks always recommended by the locals. The only way to truly describe this dish is heaven on earth. Bitterballen are bite-sized Dutch beef and cheese croquettes typically served with mustard. Pair it a cold, Dutch beer, and you have the perfect snack.

Freak Shakes

Calories don’t count on vacation, and there are zero calories in this milkshake! Choose between a strawberry, banana, chocolate, or vanilla shake topped with donuts, cotton candy, or marshmallow fluff.

Fries

Known all over the world as French fries, not many people know that the best fries to be had are in the Netherlands. You will need to get used to the fact that fries are generally served in paper cups with generous dollops of mayonnaise instead of ketchup.  Portions served at stands surpass those in sit-down restaurants, so choose your fries wisely!

Pancakes

Not the American kind, although you do have that option. “Hollandse Pannenkoeken” or Dutch pancakes actually originated from China and Nepal.  If you order a Dutch pancake in Amsterdam, you will receive a thin pancake with a diameter of approximately 32 centimeters—huge. Pannenkoeken are made with basic ingredients, namely flour, milk, salt, and eggs. You can then decide if you want  a savory or sweet filling.

Poffertjes’

Repeat after me: ‘PO-fer-jus,’ otherwise known as fluffy clouds of warm battery goodness sprinkled with powdered sugar. And that’s all I have to say about that.

Cheese

Cheese is serious business in the Netherlands, so eat all of it. Dutch cheese has more than a 600-year long tradition. Many of the names were actually taken from different cities in the Netherlands. You can check out the Amsterdam Cheese Museum, but honestly the best way to experience all the cheese is to head over to a market. It’s all just so Goud….a. See what I did there?

Stamppot

Literally translated as ‘mash pot,’ this traditional dish involves mashed potatoes, veggies, and some sort of protein. The evenings were still chilling in April, so stamppot will warm you right up!

A Foodie’s Guide of WHERE to Eat:

Corner Bakery

Home to the freak shakes, this place cannot be missed. Imagine over-the-top homemade sandwiches and cakes like you’ve never seen before. Marry that with cute décor and “grammable” pictures, you’ll neve want to leave. Yes—they do have salads, but you won’t need them. I highly recommend pulled beef sandwich, and the cotton candy shake! Card only.

Foodhallen

Ok, I love this place. Ponce City Market is one of my favorite spots in Atlanta, so Foodhallen was amazing. At Foodhallen, the Dutch celebrate flavors. “Flavors of the finest cuisines, flavors of freshness, of Thursdays and birthday, and flavors of good to see you.” Foodhallen oozes coolness with local music and art in its halls. Don’t miss this spot!

De Pijp

Jordaan might be the most beautiful area of Amsterdam, but I’d rather hang out in De Pijip. Lose yourself for hours here with the colorful mix of cuisines, terrances, and convivial cafes. De Pijp radiates beatnik flair from angle, and its bohemian spirit is perfect for foodies. Restaurants to not miss:

• Café de Pijp
• Blond Amsterdam
• Little Collins

Pancakes

 The debate over which place makes the best pancakes in Amsterdam has set the blogging world ablaze. I’m sure if you really wanted to, you could try all of the options yourself. However I took the easy way out, and went to Pancakes. Pancakes is amazing! They are located throughout the city, but we ate at the Amsterdam Central location near Central Station. The location gets quite crowded, so check out their website for some other locations.
